Week One

I have been working on the fitness videos and learning the stances.  Here is a video of me practicing the legwork for the beginning of CLF.  I know I still need some work on the form, and also on videotaping.  Normally I try to avoid being on video camera, but I think this is a really fun project, and a new challenge is good for you sometimes.  I have started working on the arms, but still need practice.  Maybe by next week I can make a better video.

  1. Oki Lian, this is an excellent start, in both the stances and video work. It's so nice to have another online Todai prepared to participate in what you've rightly called a fun project. You definitely have both the range of motion and graceful movement for the CLF form. Your stances are down at the proper depth. Now it's just a matter of building strength, coordinating the arms, and there's a little balance issue in the height of your arms/ shoulders for the bow. But it is really looking good. Keep it up!

    1. Thanks. I was thinking that my back leg bent too much on my first arrow stance too. I've started working on the arms, but I'd like to give it some more practice before I record it.

    2. Another little correction to make is try not to rise up and come back down, when you transition from one stance to the next. Try to remain as low as you start with the horse stance the whole way through without coming up again. If you can do the horse stance for a minute, like you said below, that's pretty good, even without directly moving to the arrow stance hold. But if you can work on holding each one for a minute and doing the whole sequence like that, it'd be an awesome demonstration of leg strength. You've definitely got the tools for it. Now just a matter of practicing. Maybe try the whole sequence at 30 seconds per hold, see if you can do that, and build from there

    3. Okay, I'll work on staying lower, and I'll see if I can hold them for 30 seconds. I'm sure I can get a lot further that way than starting with a minute each stance.

  2. You have some very strong legs for being able to get so low on the stances. Part of the next step is to work on the stance transitions and holding the stances longer. Your back is straight which is very good. Mark down the feedback of Todai Ryan and myself and keep up the good work!

    1. Thanks. I think I could have done a little bit better if I would have had more time last night to work on the video. I can hold horse stance for a minute, but after that, my legs don't want to hold the arrow stance for a minute. I'm sure I'll get used to it soon enough though. It is some good exercise. I'll keep practicing.

  3. That was very good. I remember having problem with stance transitions too but a little practice is all it takes to get good at it. Like Todai Ryan said, do not rise up and come back down when you transition from one stance to another one. I used to make these mistakes a lot until I watch Sifu Freddie Lee's videos over and over to get it down. Other than that, your legs are really strong, and you are doing great. Keep it up.

    1. Thanks. This week I'm going to try to get the transitioning right and try to get the arm movements too. I'm sure it will take a lot of practice to get it right, but I'll be working on it.
