Chin Ups and Dips

For awhile I felt like I had actually gotten worse at doing chin ups.  Today I went to the park though, and I think I finally improved some.  I still didn't go completely all the way down to a dead hang like you are supposed to, but maybe soon I will be able too.
For some reason my baby doesn't like the parallel bars.   He always cries when I go over there.

  1. Good job. I personally would say that you did the chin ups and the dips with good form. I know you keep changing your mind about the rank thing but I believe that you can get to the Red rank... You don't think so? :-)

    1. I know I would still have to work on the jumping rope. I'm not terrible, but I can't jump for 5 minutes non-stop yet. With the nicer weather, I'll get more practice.
I also have no idea how much I can bench press. I don't think that would be that much of a problem though.
I've been learning more about the significance of the rank and the badge and everything that goes with it. I've been trying to decide whether I want to take that path. I don't have to do it to be motivated, but it is a pretty interesting concept. I will definitely keep working on the fitness either way. I think that once I get my fitness up and I invest a little more in some equipment like a power twister and more dumbells, then I might pursue rank. It's kind of neat how the badge is owned by the kwoon even after you have earned it, so in a way it can connect you even more to the group, in a symbolic sort of way.

    2. It's good to know that you are not only motivated by rank. Honestly, I do not need a rank to improve myself but I chose that path anyway because one day I want to be able to teach Martial Arts in its totality. Speaking of the power twister, I don't think I ever used it before and it would be really good if I could buy one. Speaking of jump rope, do you ever feel pain in your shoulders when you are using it?

    3. That's neat that you plan on teaching it eventually. You'd better keep working at it. I'll bet you'd be a good teacher as long as you are able to find good students. I know I want my daughter to know some good self defense techniques by the time she's a teenager. I don't know if I'll be able to teach her eventually, or how exactly I'll do that.
I've never used a power twister before either. I think it looks like it might be fun though.
No, my shoulders don't hurt when I jump rope. I really feel it in my calves and if it's cold, it's hard on my lungs. Is it your muscles or joints in your shoulders that hurts?

    4. When I am jump roping, it seems to be mostly the muscles but I want to try and jump-roping again and pay attention to where it really hurts because I do not want to lie to you. Yeah there is nothing wrong with teaching kids' self-defense as long as the techniques are not very lethal I guess but the Martial Arts? That may be questionable. You must really know how to jump rope if you do not feel any pain! If I cannot feel any pain there, I would be able to jump rope for 10 minutes. Yes I feel it in my calves too. Keep up the good work and I am sorry for answering so late.

    5. It's okay that you responded late. I sometimes respond to people late too.
I don't feel it in my shoulders when I jump rope but I still can't jump for 10 minutes. I want to try more that it's warming up outside. I think the cold made it harder for me to breathe. When I was a kid, I'll bet I could jump rope for a long time. I just hadn't in so many years. I have to get used to it again.
I just want her to know some basic self defense. Not so much Martial Arts training at that young. I have wondered about judo though for her. I've heard that it's good for self defense, and they don't teach punching and kicking, so some people recommend that for kids. I'm in no rush, but like I said, I want to find something for her before she's a teenager if she wants to learn. Maybe even just a women's self defense class. I know most towns have one. I've never gone to one but have thought about it before.

  2. The chin up form is definitely passing now. You don't have to come to a dead-hang with full arm extension. In fact, at this point you should just be focusing on doing more reps of at the quality featured in this video. You may want to look at some of the YouTube tutorials that are out there on kipping pull-ups, or butterfly kipping. The reason that you seem to be getting a little extra boost out of lifting your knees is because this movement helps you engage your abdominal muscles, and they can definitely help you do more reps than if you just use your back. More reps would be good for you right now, because you're just building those back muscles with/for this exercise. Plus, if you go ahead and embrace the kipp, it will make your chin ups/ pull ups look more graceful, and it will add a lot of power, so that if you ever had to actually use this, say you had to pull yourself up and over a ledge to get away from some danger, then you'll be able to do it faster, with far less struggle. My recommendation is that once you can do maybe ten good kipping pull-ups, then start incorporating some reps that are slow, controlled, with no kipp, with the dead-hang, etc. If you worry about that kind of form right now, you're not going to be able to do more than one or two reps at best, and that's not going to help you develop

    1. I have actually been watching videos about the kipping pull ups and learning more about it. There is a lot of controversy over it. Some people even say it can damage your ligaments, but you don't have to do the full crazy swing to do a kipping pull up, and they might not know what they're talking about anyway; I don't know.
I've wondered if it could strengthen the muscles to improve those muscles. I might try it and see how it works.
I think that working out at home with my weights helped improve them too. I had practiced a little bit doing the thing where you jump up and lower down slowly, like you had suggested. that might have helped some too, but I only practiced that a little bit.

  3. It's kinda funny that the baby cry when you go to the parallel bar, i wonder why. Keep up the good work!

    1. Thanks! I think that the reason he cries then is that it's the last place we go to at the park. So by then, he's getting cranky. He's happy when we're moving, but he doesn't like just sitting in his stroller. I think he wants to be up moving around, getting into trouble.
