Todai Charlie Introduction

10 comments:

  1. Oki Charlie! I'm really digging these intros. Looks like there's a great group involved in this. I've seen some mantis-style close flurries. Amazing stuff. I can relate, although indirectly, re your neural system limitations. My wife has a really debilitating RA (rheumatoid) condition. She was, for a couple years, unable to stand up at all, even with assistance, or close her hands, etc. Karate has actually been a big part of her treatment, and the sensei we train under works most of each day with students that have neurological or autoimmune battles going on. I've seen him retrain people's neural systems, to the point where students with total paralysis below the waist are eventually able to move their legs, then toes, then even crawl on hands and knees around the dojo. It's quite amazing. He was recently given a 'Caring Canadian' award by the Governor General of Canada (kind of the equivalent of being knighted up here) for this work. To me now, the holistic health benefits of martial arts are the real impetus for having returned to training. I'm glad to be in good company

    1. That is amazing to hear that your wife has made such progress! I agree that martial arts has been a huge part of regaining and maintaining my mobility, in addition to the self discipline and spiritual growth that's involved in the true study of martial arts. i look forward to learning more about the styles you have studied!!

  3. Hi Charlie, it's great to meet you!

I'm sorry to hear that you have such troubles, I can sympathise as I have Crohn's Disease myself which places its own limitations on my training. It is fantastic to see that it doesn't get you down though or stop you from pursuing what you love to do.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you better as time goes on and would love to see some Mantis-Style demonstrations (if you would like to do them) as I have always found styles based on animal movements and behaviours to be particularly fascinating.

All the best and keep on smiling,
    Xiaolang

    1. I would love to put up a mantis demo lol the way i was taught mantis is pretty similar to wing chun in its close quarters style and technique. Once i get one recorded, we'll see what you guys think

  5. Sifu, if it would also be possible to upload the footage of the wooden dummy exercises that we recorded a ways back, i feel like that would be a good demo of what i have learned to date :)

    1. The videos have already been uploaded onto YouTube under your Chinese name. They have not been posted on the blog but are on the YouTube channel. Next time you train, I can tape your Mantis Fist & post that as well if you like.
