Kung Fu Box Kicking and Other Practice

We had been joking  about Kang kicking that box in his horse stance video, so I was goofing off testing my box kicking skills.  I was trying to hold my horse stance too, but it took a couple of takes to get my daughter to aim the camera right, so my horse stance got shorter by the time we got this video made.  She had asked me to record her too, so I thought I'd share that on here too.  We probably shouldn't post this on the FMK youtube; I doubt my husband would want her to be on such a popular channel, but I did want to at least share it on here.

In the other video, I decided to try the L-hold and the sit and stand ups.  I also tried to do the forearm hardening at the park.  I don't know if these things are done properly or not. I kept thinking about how I have never seen a woman park her baby stroller at a park and start doing forearm hardening practice.  I don't even ever remember seeing any adults doing any exercises at the park before.  I wonder why.

  1. Your kickboxing... errr, box-kicking video is 'private' and can't be watched. Which is a big bummer, because I've been waiting for a box-kicking progress vid. I am jealous of your sit-up and stand. I have to use forward momentum to get the center of gravity far enough forward to stand. There must be something either with flexibility holding me back. As for practice in the park, it is really weird that adults don't use the parks. They jog all over the place, but for some reason are very reluctant to do any other form of individual exercise in public. I think people in my neighborhood get a kick out of my morning kung-fu practice. Occasionally someone says something, asking if I had a good workout or something like that when they pass me walking back home. I wish we had bars or jungle gyms made for adults. I can't find any bars of proper grip size set high enough that I can hang at full extension, at least not near my house where I could access it easy every day

    1. I fixed the video. Hopefully you can see it now.
I notice the other females in the kwoon tend to be pretty good at the sit up and stand. Maybe it does have to do with flexibility . I just pull my feet close enough to my body that I can push myself straight up.
I was trying to do chin-ups at the park once, and I noticed a man watching me. Later, I noticed him standing under the monkey bars with his hand on them like he was thinking about trying too. Maybe it will encourage others to try it. I think as long as we don't bother the kids, it's a good way to exercise.

    2. That box-kick was awesome! And so is your daughter! I love it!

I keep waiting for someone to get so interested in what I'm doing at the park that they want to join me. It would be nice to have someone to spar and practice sensitivity drills with. But nobody yet, and Sifu suspects it's because they all saw me that time I was breaking ice, lol

    3. DON'T let them see you eating Rattlesnakes Either! LOL

    4. Sifu Freddie is probably right. They might be scared to practice with you. It would be funny though if you would try to invite somebody over for some rattlesnake. I'd like to see their reaction.

That would be cool if someone would step in and want to practice with you. I doubt I'll find anybody at the park to practice with. I think one of my brothers will practice with me though.

  2. I've been trying to figure out myself why the men of FMK are unable to perform the sit up and stand but yet the women are. Now that you bring up the aspect about the flexibility, that does make sense, b/c all the women are pretty flexible. It's an interesting exercise, clearly its not just about ab strength.

  3. LOL.. Your box-kicking reminds me of...me.. Haha. Nice horse stance by the way. Your stances are way lower than mine! Tell your daughter I congratulate her on the kicking the box too. Lol. I am so jealous of you right now Todai Lian! You hold the L-hold so easily and I am still struggling on holding it for 4 seconds.. That's really sad of me. How did you do it?

    1. Thanks. I think you're still better at the box-kicking though. You did it more naturally, lol.
I'll tell her you congratulated her. She'll probably start trying to kick boxes all the time now.
With the L-hold. I almost think I remember doing something like that as a kid for fun. It's one of those faint memories so I'm not sure if that's exactly what I did, but it made me think I could do it. I probably couldn't do it as well with my hands on the floor, using the weights helps. I'm sure that you can do it.

    2. Also with the L-hold, I think if you tense up too much it makes it harder to hold it. I think I relaxed a little and it helped my body to position right so it was easier to hold. I'm not sure, but maybe that's part of the trick to doing it.

    3. Lol. me kicking boxes naturally. Haha. When you say relax does that mean I should relax my abs too? I watch a video on how to do it by Shi zu. He said something about breathing. How did you use your breath with it?

    4. I tried to do the L-hold again yesterday so I could figure it out, and I couldn't do it very well. I'm not sure if it was just a bad day yesterday, or if I just had a good day when I videotaped it. I'll have to try more often and see.I think I just tried to breathe and relax as much as I could while keeping myself up. Maybe breathe like your meditating.

  4. Wow Lian! You have such a solid horse stance, and very low too! I bet you could out do me, Kiew, and Jenny’s timed horse stance video we did a couple weeks ago. Haha

Sit-up Stand Up- I noticed people use weights to hold themselves down to do a sit-up, and when it comes to the sit-up stand up that’s basically what it is. If you can do a well formed sit up without any weights (or partner) to prevent you from sliding or feet lifting off the ground, and chest fully touching your knees when you get up… then standing up should come easier. I looked back on other videos and most if not all the men seemed to always use weights? I tried looking up what prevents people from doing sit-ups and you need to have a strong core, strong abdominal and strong hip flexors. So seems like you were right on when it comes to abs, and flexibility. This to me makes sense because I noticed in myself I find it takes awhile to have sit-ups feel effective, I rather do crunches.

    1. Todai Ai! It's great seeing you on here, we need more Todai's to interact on this Blog more, Todai Lian will definately benefit from seeing you on here more, I know it could get a bit lonely for online Todai's until this kwoon grows more. It would be nice to also get Jenny on here contributing to this blog more often. Your feedback on the Sit up and stand is very helpful input.

    2. I've always been fantastic at sit-ups. Got the all-time record at my high-school and almost got the all-time record for the U.S. Army (I was off by two reps). I definitely don't bother tucking my feet under anything for anchorage. And yet, the sit-up and stand still has me defeated. I can do it, with fast momentum, but not like the way you ladies do. I would propose it's a gender thing, but Sifu can do them. So that makes me think it mostly has to do with flexibility. I'm not bendy at all

    3. Thanks Ai! It's good to see you on here. I watched that horse stance video with you three. You held the horse stance for a long time.
Maybe we'll figure out the mystery of the sit-ups stand ups. I normally don't do many sit-ups unless it's as part of a cardio routine. I prefer crunches better too. I have a workout video where they put their feet up against a wall and pull up into a crunch position. Then they hold it for about 10 minutes and make movements with the arms and some small crunch movements. You can really feel it, and I like it because it's easy to relax and breathe that way. I guess I can be lazy and work out at the same time that way.

  5. Hmmm yeah, it was just my thought. I figured I could be wrong. I guess we may never know, but keep at it! And keep practicing!

  6. The box kicking is pretty hilarious. Your horse stance is great, the straighter you can keep your back the better. The cross stance is very low and good, just make sure you lock out that back knee completely. Your daughter is so cute, it's great to see her get involved. You are doing great with the situp and stand, next level is, try not to move the feet at all, then put your hands behind your head and don't move it from that position, that will make it harder, the way you are doing it now is already easy for you, time to take it to the next level. L hold is good, just make sure to keep those knees straighter. The arm hardening is ok for now, just try to put more emphasis on the twist on contact. Keep up the good work! Cute videos with the kid involvement

    1. Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep working on it. I'm glad that I found something like this that I can do and still be involved with my kids. My girl really likes helping. My boy probably doesn't know what's going on yet, but he likes to be a part of everything that's going on.
