The Echidna, Wombat and Skink

This is an Echidna. An Echidna is a spiny insectivorous egg-laying mammal with a long snout and claws, native to Australia and New Guinea. I photographed this guy at school. (Click on an image to enlarge it.)

He was just doing his own thing minding his own business, digging for ants and insects as Echidnas do.

Something about being in the presence of this Echidna helped me to feel calm. I think he was just living his life in the moment. And this is how I prefer to go about my days on this Earth. Just taking it day by day whilst doing my own thing. Not focused on exams in the coming week for example. Not planning it's holidays a month in advance. It was just digging for ants and minding it's own business living a simple life. And if "Simplicity is the most difficult of all things" (as explained by Swami Ajaya), then it appears that this Echidna has achieved this to a much higher level then I.

I think the same can also be said for this Wombat that paid my school a visit in August, and these Skinks.

Just being around rivers, trees, and animals helps me to feel calm. It also assists with clarity of mind. Does the same apply to you? What sort of animals can be found in your area of residents?
I'll finish by saying this... Complex beauty can be found in simplicity. Everything is relative.

  1. Nice post! We're i live we have some 'Roe deer', some 'Squirrels' and some 'Skunks'. A little bit up north, like 1 hour drive and we have some 'Black bear'. I kinda like 'Squirrels' they are very athletic, they run around in the city, jumping on walls like Spider-Man and they run on electric wire like it's nothing. And of course we have some 'Cats' and some 'Dogs'.

  2. Thank you for sharing. Being around nature is very calming. There is a simplicity to animals that we humans can learn much from. They teach us so much without having to speak.
